Tal-Virtu` Church is deteriorating

From Fr M. Cauchi OSA

In psalms we read: they have eyes and do not see, they have ears and do not hear.

The Ministry of Ninu Zammit has restored many chapels and churches. Hats off to it.

I am afraid however that the church that has most need of restoration is the Tal-Virtu` church, in the limits of Rabat. The church is of great importance as it may be the only paleo-christian church. Petruzzo Debono built it after the earthquake of 1693 in a rotunda plan. It replaced another one, which according to Prof. Buhagiar was similar to the Hal Millieri one.

Under this church there is another one dug in the rocks and nearby there are the Roman Byzantine catacombs.

Many churches and chapels have benefited from the restoration plan, why not tal-Virtu`?

It is a pity and shame that this monument has been neglected. I appeal to both civil, ecclesiastical and Malta Heritage to open their eyes and ears to repair this gem on our island before it is too late.
